The Schooner Quinnipiack

This ship has eluded me. In the few times I have sailed into New Haven Harbor, I did not see the Quinnipiack. I also attempted to stop by the Long Wharf Pier several times last year, but unfortunately the schooner was not in port (She was in Mystic and then Essex). Last month on a rainy day, I spotted her mast as I made my way south along Interstate 95. Built in Millbridge, Maine in 1984, the Quinnipiack resembles the freight schooners that sailed the Gulf Coast during the late 19th century. 91 feet long overall, her deck is 65 feet long and 20 feet wide. She originally was used for day sails in Bar Harbor, Maine before arriving in New Haven in 1990. Schooner Inc

I worked as parts and labor manager for many marinias in the late '70's to the early '90's in Florida. I haven't stepped on a sailboat since 1991. I've forgotten what a wonderful community of people boaters are...

Thanks for coming to my blog...and reminding me to step back in time for the fine memories and good times...I'll come back here from time to time, to see what's happening with you...

Nice ship! I have to ask hubby if there are schooners in Holland. Friesland where he comes from is and area with many lakes, and boating is very popular there.

Thanks Chessie,
I agree, there are a lot of interesting and fun people around the water.

Hi Jeannette,
I guess it would depend on the size of the lake. Lake Champlain for example had small schooners on it at one time.

Hmmm...I've never seen her in Gloucester. I'm glad you showed us, she has nice lines.

SteveB,
I think she has participated in the Boston Op-Sail, but I am not sure about points further north.
