The Riptide Is Ready

Tomorrow marks the opening day for many party fishing boats on Long Island Sound. While some boats head south for the winter, or fish offshore for cod on a limited schedule, the majority of them close down from December through March.
The Riptide, based out of City Island in the Bronx, will be making daily trips for blackfish (tautog), starting Friday. When I stopped by Jorgensen's Landing two weeks ago, the captain and crew were getting her ready for another season of fishing on the Sound.

Sea Otter IV

While most boats are launched in the spring, there are a few that get hauled out instead. Like many fishing and commercial boats, Sea Otter IV stays in the water all winter. Once the spring rush of launching boats begins to subside, she gets hauled to have her bottom cleaned and painted. Within a few days, she is back in the water, and as good as new.

Commonly known as a short haul, a boat will come out of the water for anywhere from a few hours, to a week or two, depending on how much work there is to be done.

The Late Season Fishermen

Without looking at a calendar, I can sometimes determine when a photo was taken by simply noting the activities taking place. By late September, the swimmers and sunbathers give way to dog walkers and fishermen. In December, the pets and their owners are still on the beach , but the fishermen are mostly gone.

These photos were taken last month at West Beach in Westbrook. It is a small, slightly rundown, town beach that is mostly consumed by it's parking lot. With the afternoon sun low in the sky, these fishermen took advantage of one of the dwindling, late season, mild days.

The Port Jeff Ace

This party fishing boat has been around for a long time. Despite never having been aboard her, she was a familiar site for years in the waters around Port Jefferson. Built in 1962 at the Deebold Boat Works of Atlantic City, she served time as the Big Day and the Captain John in several New Jersey towns before arriving in Port Jefferson. Walking around the docks this summer, I saw her rotting away just west of the ferry terminal. A worker on a nearby boat said she was for sale, but there were no offers.

This past week I learned that the Port Jeff Ace had been demolished and the debris was being trucked away.

Greenport Fishing Fleet

As I have noted in other posts, there are not too many commercial fishing fleets left in this region. The few that remain have become smaller and smaller. Greenport still maintains a fleet with a dock that is accessible from the center of the village. I took these photos from a small park located behind the train station.

Greenport has a busy waterfront. Along with the recreational boats, there are ferries, excursion boats, and fishing boats coming and going at a steady rate.

The Mt Vernon (blue hull) I recognize from another port. I will have to look through my photos of Stonington, Pt Judith, and New Bedford to find where I have seen her before.

School's Out

It certainly has not felt very summer-like this past month, but there is one thing I have noticed which makes it very clear that summer has arrived; children are out of school. While watching some of the wooden boats leave Mystic earlier this week, I caught these young men fishing for porgies in Noank and taking full advantage of their first days of summer vacation. For 10-12 year old kids (I'm guessing), they seemed to be very experienced fishermen. They were respectful of others around them, they did not litter, and they released many of the fish they caught. They even brought a camping stove with them to cook a few of the fish that they kept. I don't remember being anywhere near as organized at that age. In fact, I am still not that organized. Most importantly, they were having a blast. It sure beats hanging around a mall or playing video games all summer.
